Copy-pasting from a PDF is worse than it should be
Selecting text across a multi-page PDF one page at a time, pasting each chunk somewhere, and cleaning up the awkward line breaks that come with it is a small task that eats more time than it deserves. It's a common step now that pasting a document's content into an AI assistant, a translation tool, or a search-and-replace script has become routine — you need the words, not the PDF wrapper around them.
Extracting all of it in one pass instead of scrolling and selecting page by page turns a fifteen-minute chore into something closer to instant, and gives you one clean block of text you can drop wherever it needs to go.
This reads the PDF's real text layer, not pixels
The extraction pulls directly from the same internal text data that makes a PDF's text selectable and searchable in a normal viewer — it's reading structured data, not attempting to visually recognize characters. That's both faster and more accurate than any image-recognition approach, for the specific case where the text data actually exists in the file.
Reading order generally follows the PDF's internal content order, which lines up with visual reading order for standard single-column documents — most reports, articles, and letters fall into that category without issue.
The one failure mode that trips people up
A photocopy scanned into a PDF, or a document photographed on a phone and saved as a PDF, looks completely normal to the eye but often has zero embedded text — it's just a picture of a page, dressed up as a PDF. Running that through a text extractor produces nothing, and it's not a bug: there's genuinely no text data in the file for it to read.
The fix in that case is a dedicated OCR (optical character recognition) tool, which is built specifically to recognize characters from the image pixels themselves, rather than reading text data that was never there in the first place. It's worth knowing which situation you're in before assuming the extraction tool is broken.
What you lose on purpose
The output is deliberately plain — no bold, no headings, no columns, no font information, just the words in reading order. That's the right trade-off for pasting into a chat box, a script, or a translation tool, all of which want raw text and would otherwise choke on formatting markup. If you specifically want basic structure preserved (headings distinguished from body paragraphs), a PDF-to-Markdown or PDF-to-HTML conversion keeps more of that at the cost of a slightly messier output.
